Charlotte DMV Offices: Appointments, the Test and What to Bring

A practical guide for anyone taking the knowledge test at a driver license office in the Charlotte, North Carolina area.

Driver license offices in the Charlotte area

The NCDMV has several driver license offices in Charlotte (east, south, west and north of the city) and another one in Huntersville. There are also offices in nearby towns such as Concord, Mooresville and Monroe.

These are the driver license offices (Driver License Office) according to the official NCDMV locator in June 2026. They are not the same as license plate agencies (License Plate Agency): those handle plates and vehicle registration, and they have no license tests or license appointments.

All five are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Road tests are not available after 4:00 p.m., and hours and services can vary by office. Confirm on ncdot.gov before you go: offices move, and old addresses circulate online (for example, North Charlotte still shows an earlier address in several directories). Always use the official NCDMV office locator, which also shows when an office has reached capacity that day.

How to make an appointment

  • Appointments are booked on the official NCDMV appointments page.
  • You can book up to seven days ahead. New appointments are released each business day.
  • Walk-ins are also accepted all day, until the office reaches capacity.
  • Most offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours can vary.
  • Road tests are not available after 4 p.m.

If you cannot find an appointment at one office, check the others in the area and look again the next day. Appointments use the official system at skiptheline.ncdot.gov.

Without an appointment, arrive early, at opening time: the NCDMV says walk-ins are accepted all day, from opening to closing or until the office reaches capacity, and you do not need to wait until noon. If your office is full, the locator shows the status of the others, with notices such as "At Capacity".

How the test works at the office

At the office you take the vision test, the road sign test and the knowledge test.

  • Knowledge test: 25 multiple-choice questions. You pass with 20 correct.
  • Road sign test: for a Class C license you identify 9 of 12 signs by their shape and color.
  • Retake: if you do not pass, you may retake the test in seven calendar days.

A relative of someone on our team took the tests at a Charlotte office in 2026. The knowledge test was on a computer and the signs were shown without words: only the shape and the color. To practice that format, see the NC DMV sign test guide.

The NCDMV also says oral tests are available on request. The NC Driver Handbook adds that audio tests are available on request for people who have difficulty reading. Ask at the desk when you check in.

What the visit looks like, step by step

  1. Check in at the entrance. If you have an appointment, say so right away.
  2. A clerk checks your documents and records your application.
  3. Vision test (the standard is 20/40 or better in at least one eye).
  4. The knowledge test on the computer and the road sign test.
  5. If you pass, your photo and the payment.

The full process, from documents to the license, is in how to get an NC driver's license, step by step.

If you do not pass: the retake rules

The NCDMV lets you retake the test in seven calendar days. Offices commonly allow up to 3 attempts within 90 days of your application. Confirm the details at your office, because practice can vary. If you do not pass all three, or if the 90 days run out, the application closes and the process (documents and payment) starts over. A second visit means choosing again between an appointment and a walk-in. The plan for that week is in what to do if you failed the DMV test.

If the Charlotte offices are full

Offices in nearby towns sometimes have more room. A few outside Mecklenburg County (confirm the address in the official locator):

  • Concord: 2192 Kannapolis Highway, Concord, NC 28027.
  • Mooresville (Design Center): 533 Patterson Ave, Suite 100, Mooresville, NC 28115.
  • Monroe: 3122 US 74 West, Monroe, NC 28110.

What to bring

  • Proof of identity and age.
  • Your Social Security number (SSN) or documents that prove your legal presence in the U.S. An ITIN is not accepted.
  • Two proofs of North Carolina residency, with your name and your address.
  • Proof of liability insurance.
  • Your glasses or contacts, if you wear them to drive.

The NCDMV says road tests are not available after 4 p.m. Most offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but hours can vary by office.

The one with the shortest line when you go. The official NCDMV locator shows whether an office has reached capacity. The requirements and tests are the same statewide. What varies from one office to another is the wait and the hours.

What if I do not have a Social Security number?

If you are not eligible for one, you present documents that prove your legal presence instead, and the license is issued for no longer than your authorized stay. An ITIN is not accepted. The full list is in the license requirements guide.
