NC Driver Handbook: Official PDF and What to Study for the DMV Test

The driver handbook is an official NCDOT document and it is free. Here is the direct link and a summary, in our own words, of what is worth studying for the knowledge test.

Official NCDOT document, free. It opens on ncdot.gov.

What the knowledge test asks

The test covers the traffic laws and safe driving practices the handbook explains. It has 25 multiple-choice questions and you pass with 20 correct. The road sign test is separate: for a Class C license you identify 9 of 12 signs. Audio tests are available on request for people who have difficulty reading.

No DMV publishes the questions of its exam. Anyone who claims to sell the questions from the live test is not telling the truth. The source is the handbook.

Summary of the handbook topics

The handbook moves in roughly this order. For each topic we note what is worth memorizing, and our practice questions follow the same topics, so you can read a section and then drill it.

Your license

License types and learner permits, the documents the division asks for and the tests you must pass. Read it before you go to the office and compare it with our list of license requirements. If you are starting with a permit, see the learner's permit guide.

Alcohol and driving

Driving while impaired (DWI). The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08% for drivers 21 and older, and drivers under 21 may not drive with any alcohol in their system. Also study what happens if you refuse the chemical test.

Your driving privilege

Points for violations, suspension and revocation. Collecting 12 points in three years can lead to suspension of your license. The point tables often show up in questions.

How to drive

This is the longest part and the one that weighs the most. It includes:

  • Speed limits when no sign is posted: 35 mph in a municipality, 55 mph outside it and up to 70 mph on interstates.
  • Safe following distance: the two-second rule.
  • Right of way at intersections and roundabouts: traffic entering a roundabout yields to traffic already in it.
  • A school bus stopped with flashing red lights: on a two-lane road, traffic in both directions stops.
  • Turning right on red: allowed after a complete stop, unless a sign prohibits it.
  • Headlights: on from sunset to sunrise.
  • Rain, fog, ice, railroad crossings and work zones.

Traffic signals, signs and pavement markings

Shapes and colors of signs, flashing lights, arrows, and yellow and white lines. The sign test comes from here. Review it in NC road signs and the sign test.

Sharing the road

Pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, large trucks and emergency vehicles.

Insurance and vehicle registration

Proof of liability insurance, registration and plates. In a few places the printed handbook is behind current law (for example the minimum insurance limits and how proof of insurance is shown). Where that happens, the explanation under our practice question says so.

How to study with the handbook

  1. Read one topic a day, without rushing.
  2. Write down the numbers: speeds, distances in feet, points and ages.
  3. After each topic, practice with questions and read the explanation for every mistake.
  4. Go back to the handbook only for the topics where you miss questions.

Practice what you read. Our free test has 25 questions, like the real one. The full set has 400 practice questions with explanations, built from the 2026 handbook.

Frequently asked questions

Is the North Carolina Driver Handbook free?

Yes. The NCDOT publishes the driver handbook as a free PDF on its official site. You do not have to pay or register to download it.

Does Driver-Prep sell the handbook or a book?

No. We do not sell books and we do not copy the handbook. We link the official NCDOT PDF and offer practice questions with explanations so you can review what you read.

Is reading the handbook enough to pass?

The handbook covers what the test asks, but reading is not the same as remembering. Practicing with questions shows you which topics you have not mastered yet, before you go to the office.

How many questions do I have to get right on the knowledge test?

The test has 25 multiple-choice questions and you pass with 20 correct. The road sign test is separate: for a Class C license you identify 9 of 12 signs.

Driver-Prep is an independent project. It is not affiliated with the NCDMV or the NCDOT.
